It gathers information and functions as a watchdog of the death care industry and its regulators, as well as interacting with the Ministry of Consumer Services from time to time on related matters.
FOOMS-FCA does not own, operate or have a financial interest in any funeral home, transfer service, crematorium, cemetery or monument company. We encourage wise and informed decision making, including considering lower cost options. The members of FOOMS-FCA are drawn from memorial societies across the province.
Memorial societies assist their members and the public by providing information to plan simple, dignified funerals and on alternative choices available. By preplanning a funeral in consultation with the people closest to them, those left to mourn can be saved from having to make difficult decisions under great emotional stress. When a provider is selected, a funeral prearrangement form is completed and filed with the provider, the information required by the province upon death are all registered, some of the stress can be alleviated.
A full service funeral with an upscale casket plus most options can cost $10,000 plus – and that does not include cemetery charges. Pre-arranging does not require prepayment. As of July 1, 2012, all prepaid contracts are guaranteed not to increase in cost at the time of need.
The Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, which governs the death care sector in Ontario, came into effect July 1, 2012. FOOMS-FCA provided input on consumer protection and access to alternatives in this legislation. Further information on the legislation and related regulation is available at www.ontario.ca/consumerservices.
A Consumer Information Guide has been prepared by the Ministry of Consumer Services and is available at no cost or obligation from a funeral provider or by email from email@example.com or phone 1-800-387-4458 (Board of Funeral Services).
